Ruby, is the red variety of the multi-colored corundum family. Ruby is an almost pure form of aluminum oxide, chrome and very fine traces of other elements - depending on which deposit it comes from. Specimens of fine color and good clarity occur rarely.
This rarity is caused mostly by the chrome which is the coloring element responsible for ruby's unique color. Chrome was also responsible for causing a multitude of fissures and cracks inside the crystals. For this reason very few ruby crystals exist that are capable of producing a finished ruby of 3 carats or more. A ruby of good color, clarity and larger size will achieve top prices in auctions, and have been known to exceed prices paid for diamonds in the same category.
