2.47 ct. Cabochon Cut Emerald

This Emerald is from Columbia

This is a very bright stone and is very transparent as you can see in the photos, all sides including the bottom are polished. When choosing an emerald, the most important value factor to consider is color. The more vivid and saturated the green, the more valuable the emerald is ( Bluish Green is typical of the Muzo and Chivor Mines of Columbia).

Columbian emeralds are known worldwide to be industry leaders with the highest standards of quality. Some of the rarest and most expensive emeralds in the world come from such Columbian mines as Muzo and Chivor.

"The Beautiful Garden"

Emerald Clarity
In contrast to other Beryl gemstones, Emerald is typically heavily flawed with cracks and inclusions of fluid and minerals. These inclusions are called "jardin" (or garden) as they typically resemble leaves and branches. These characteristics are not looked upon as negative aspects for emerald as they would be for other gemstones. Instead, these inclusions are considered part of the character of the stone and are used to assure the purchaser that the stone is genuine. Because emeralds are so rare without inclusions some inclusions are expected and do not detract from the value of the stone as much as with other gemstones. Most emeralds on the market today have been treated with various types of oil or resin to improve their appearance.

Some gemstones that normally are not found clean are: Emerald, Red Beryl & Rubellite Tourmaline. These kind of gemstones are considered to be Type III.

Type Descriptions:

Type I :Usually eye clean and very high clarity under magnification

Type II :Usually eye clean with some inclusions under magnification

Type III is: Usually eye visible inclusions

Please note that the pictures of the stone are enlarged by 15x - 25x to show you the details of this stone. Appraised and graded by a certified gemologist this stone would be examined under a microscope or gem loupe at 10x. Although if the examinations purpose was to distinguish between the Chivor and the Muzo mine, it would require higher magnification. To the naked eye the stone is much cleaner than what it may appear to be.

Below you will find a representation of the GIA's (Gemological Institute of America) Clarity grading scale.

Please keep in mind that these photos are taken at high magnification and are being shown much larger that actual size.
